Diamond Light Source: Best Posters prizes

Hiiro Moriyama and Stefano Palazzo, DPhil students in the Processing of Advanced Materials Group, won first and second prize respectively in the 9th Annual Workshop on Advances in X-ray Imaging, hosted by Diamond Light Source and organised by the University of Manchester at Harwell.
Supervised by Dr Enzo Liotti and Professor Patrick Grant, Hiiro and Stefano presented their posters:
- 1st Prize: 'Towards Hydrogen Imaging and Mapping in Embrittlement-Susceptible Steels via XAS and Machine Learning'; and
- 2nd Prize: 'Investigating Interdendritic Flow during Aluminium Alloy Solidification using Artificial Intelligence and Synchrotron X-ray Imaging'.
Their research reflects the group's continued drive to understand fundamental questions in Materials processing while addressing wider industrial challenges. It also builds on the group's long-standing expertise in synchrotron X-ray imaging and its growing use of artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques to extract new insight from complex materials datasets.
The workshop brought together scientists and researchers from across the UK and Europe to share the latest advances in X-ray imaging technologies, techniques and applications, spanning fields from engineering and metallurgy to bioscience and medicine. The poster session was sponosored by CCPi, the Collaborative Computational Project in Tomographic Imaging, and posters were assessed on motivation and impact, originality of the experimental and/or image-processing workflow, sosphisticaion in data analysis and visualisatio, and overall presentation.
