These simple project management forms can be used by PGR students and their supervisors in planning and management research projects. The PGR should make an initial draft and then share and discuss this with their supervisory team, noting any changes that follow from the discussion.
There are two templates:
The idea is to use these forms on a ~6 monthly basis to reflect, adapt and plan your research project. Use these to promote longer term reflection and planning with your supervisor, which aims to cover the aspects below:
- Define Scope & Goals:
Establish clear project objectives, requirements, and deliverables from the start to prevent scope creep.
- Regularly Review and Revise: ambitious research plans often need to adapt and evolve but this should be done actively so as to deliver a solid defendable thesis in the appropriate timeframe. (letting things drift means that wont happen)
- Create a Solid Plan:
Develop a realistic schedule with specific objectives for each 6 month period. Reflect back on previous progress to help assess what is possible.
- Manage Risks Proactively:
Think about risks (are you dependent on samples from a collaborator, or a one off aging piece of equipment?). Prepare mitigation strategies for potential issues early. Think about decision points on when to abandon an overly ambitious target and fall back on a more feasible deliverable that still holds value.
- Ensure Regular Communication:
Get open discussion about strengths and weaknesses of your work.
