Last week the Central England Branch of the Nuclear Institute held their annual heat of the Young Speakers Competition at Ridgeway House on the Harwell Campus. The event was well attended with six finalists competing, chosen from a number of applicants who submitted synopses before the event. The event attracts competitors from all regions of nuclear leading to a range of talks from fission and fusion to geological disposal facilities, criticality drills and accident exercise planning.

This year’s heat was won by Dr Ed Darnbrough for his talk on ‘Improving Fission Fuels: The role of thermal conductivity’. He will now go on to represent the Central England Branch at the National competition in September.
