Heatstroke: why the hotter the clock, the more accurate its timekeeping

A clock and scientific formulae

Dr Natalia Ares formed a team to research the thermodynamic costs involved in timekeeping.  The team was made up of Dr Ares, Dr Anna Pearson and Professor Andrew Briggs (Oxford Materials), Professor Marcus Huber at Atominstitut (TUWien), Dr Paul Erker and Dr Yelena Guryanova at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, and Dr Edward Laird at the University of Lancaster.

Using a quantum clock, they increased the energy in the input signal and measured the entropy cost, finding that it increased linearly with the precision.
