Dislocation assisted grain boundary sliding : how dislocation interact with grain boundaries (characterization of materials / device materials/ Energy storage materials)

During dislocation assisted grain boundary sliding, dislocations are emitted and consumed by grain boundaries. This controls the overall strain rates. In different disGBS regimes grain internal dislocation microstructures are changing and some dislocations interact with some grain boundaries but not with others. This project will advance characterisation methods in particular HR-EBSD and precession electron diffraction (PED) orientation mapping in the TEM and grain boundary character analysis to study the evolution of dislocation interaction with various grain boundaries during deformation. The detailed statistical experimental data will be used to develop improved physics based deformation models.
