Dr Nikolaos Farmakidis, Dr Bowei Dong and Professor Harish Bhaskaran provide an overview of recent advances in integrated synaptic optical devices and on-chip photonic neural networks focusing on the location in the architecture at which the optical to electrical conversion takes place.

In particular, they review:
-   how photonic computing hardware is broadly categorised based on the depth of at which opto-electronic conversions take place;
-   the future of photonic computing, including 3D photonic components produced by 3D printing technologies; and
-   the continuing role for SNNs as an energy efficient alternative computing modality.
