Dr Yuanbo T. Tang

"I am delighted and honoured to lead this study on developing new scalable coating strategies for the longevity of structural components from hydrogen attacks.

The Royce Industrial Collaboration Programme provides a unique opportunity for bringing together researchers, engineers and practitioners to work cohesively towards an approachable hydrogen-powered future".

Dr Yuanbo Tang

Many congratulations to Dr Yuanbo (Tony) Tang on securing £274k funding to lead a new project with the Henry Royce Institute.

The funding scheme is from the Henry Royce Industrial Collaboration Programme, and Tony will be working closely with the University of Sheffield and an industrial partner, TWI (The Welding Institute Limited) to lead the team's innovative development of a novel laser-based coating strategy for preventing hydrogen embrittlement in metals.

When asked about the real-world impact of his work, Tony was able to explain that:

"Hydrogen is a ubiquitous element and is a promising alternative energy source to set transformation in future power generation, however, it causes catastrophic failures in many engineering applications, which limits its widespread adoption,  Preventing hydrogen embrittlement effectively and economically will therefore help tackle the global sustainability challenge."
