Additive Manufacturing (AM) is increasingly important across industries because it enables the production of geometrically complex, lightweight, and highly customised components with greater design freedom than is conventionally available. AM processes are typified by highly localised and rapid heating and cooling cycles. The steep thermal gradients and non-uniform contractions result in intense residual stresses which can cause distortion, cracking, dimensional inaccuracies which alter mechanical performance an impact on structural integrity of AM components.
This project will have two main themes: (i) continuing the development of our high resolution electron back scatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) method towards delivery of absolute elastic strain (stress) determination, and (ii) application of HR-EBSD to mapping internal stresses In AM metals.
