Laser writing of point defects for photonic and quantum devices

Femtosecond laser processing has been shown to be an effective method for the engineering of colour centre qubits in diamond, opening up opportunities for investigations of other wide band gap materials. This project will explore colour centre generation in other technologically important materials such as GaN, SiO2, ZnS, and TiO2. The project will focus on the writing of colour centres with attractive optical and spin properties that can be used in quantum technologies either as single photon sources or as quantum memory registers. Laser writing will be carried out in the laboratories of Martin Booth and Patrick Salter in the Dept of Engineering, and characterisation in the laboratories of Jason Smith in Materials.
