Electron Microscopy Group

Summary of Interests

Neil manages the Departments teaching and training activities across all aspects of electron microscopy (EM).  In addition he is the support scientist for transmission electron microscopy delivering front-line research support for users of TEM and associated techniques.  He is particularly focused on developing expertise and applications in advanced TEM techniques such as HRTEM, STEM and electron exit-wave function restoration. 

Neil is the point of contact for internal and external EM access requests. He is happy to discuss the scientific aspects of projects requiring EM support from Materials and other departments within the university, and currently works on several collaborative projects with researchers from across the MPLS division.

Personal research interests include the atomic-level characterisation of functional nanoparticles, with a particular interest in structure-property studies of catalysts.  Neil uses advanced instrumentation such as the Oxford-JEOL 2200MCO aberration-corrected microscope in addition to aberration-corrected in-situ and ETEM facilities around the world to investigate the structure and dynamics of catalyst particles. He collaborates with the research group of Prof. Angus Kirkland and international colleagues.

 

 

 

 

 

Current Research Projects

Aberration-corrected electron microscopy for high resolution analysis and imaging

As part of a major research grant, the Department has secured funding which enables us to work closely with an electron microscope manufacturer in developing the next generation of high performance electron microscopes. The new instrument includes a field-emission-gun, two aberration correctors and various advanced detectors which provide analysis and spatial resolution capabilities at the 1 angstrom level. The instrument is being used for atomic-scale investigations of a range of new materials. (Funded by the Joint Infrastructure Fund)
